“Love Shack”
Feb 2nd, 2007 by Jack
Suzanne and I have recently moved into the “Love Shack” at Kealekekua Bay South of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The shack is about a block away from Manini Beach and in a small village. We have been coming to this area for years and now have a place to call our own. Here are a few photos:
The Love Shack is a small 2-room house that only accomodates 2 people - but has a lot of charm and has everything you need here in Hawaii. We now have broadband internet, cable, a phone and even electricity to power everything! Heck, there’s even indoor plumbing. It may not be big, but it makes up for size with spunk and personality.

The kayak in the driveway is a Hobie Adventure Island. We got this just a few days ago and I have been having a blast with this innovative toy. The kayak is propelled by a unique paddle system called the Mirage Drive. You pedal just like a recumbant bicycle and steer with a lever that controls the rudder. You can also sail the kayak by attaching two “amas” - outriggers that aren’t in the picture - and attaching a sail. You can read more about this kayak here:
“Hobie Wan Kanobe” in the bay:
After moving in this past few weeks we decided that we needed a deck in the backyard and some general landscaping. The contractors have just started, so there isn’t much to see. But here are the “before” pictures:
When we are here next, there should be a deck, lawn and some more plants.
In another stroke of good fortune, cousin Cameron Healy decided that he would no longer need the Toyota 4Runner that had been part of their Kona experience for so many years. This car was severely burned when their house burned down several years ago (since replaced with an even better house). The car survived and has been a trusty transport. We have purchased the car and aply named it “Crusty”. The picture below will better illustrate the origin of the name…
If you are interested in renting the Love Shack - we do so on a limited basis for family and friends only. …and Crusty comes as part of the package!
…finally - our favorite destination just one block away - Manini Beach:
Aloha Nui from K-Bay,
